American Wine Professional Certification Program

Fine Vintage is the creator and sole provider of the American Wine Professional certification program. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to use the post-nominal Fine Vintage AWP.

The United States has the world’s largest wine economy and it continues to grow. There are nearly 10,000 wineries spread across 50 states. It is the 4th largest wine producing country in the world, and in the last 20 years the growth rate has been nothing short of staggering.

The American Wine Professional program was developed by James Cluer, Master of Wine, and a team of experts who specialize in the American wine industry.

During the 2-day course you will taste more than 30 benchmark examples of wines from leading producers in a half-dozen states and in a wide variety of styles.

At the end of the 2nd day there is a 50 question closed-book multiple-choice exam.

Course format: This course takes place over 2 full days from 9.30 am until 5.30 pm with a one hour break for lunch.

Instructors: Lyn Farmer is our lead instructor in the United States. Based in Miami, Lyn is a James Beard award-winning wine and food writer with more than 25 years of experience. In our Canadian locations, David Lawrason, David Munro and Jenny Book instruct this course. All of them have in-depth first-hand knowledge of American wine regions.

Tastings: During this course you will taste more 30 wines showcasing the wide variety of styles and produced in the United States, including the benchmark wines.

Price: $599 total, including tax. If do not already have 6 ISO tasting glasses, you will need to purchase them through us at an additional cost of $45 (plus applicable taxes).

Materials: Included in the price is a study guide on the wines of the United States. This is e-mailed to you so you can read it prior to the course. At the course you will receive a printed version.

Examination: The American Wine Professional exam takes place at the very end of the last day of the course, at 4.30 pm, and lasts for 1 hour. The exam is closed-book and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The American Wine Professional (AWP) credential will be conferred on those who achieve a score of 65% or higher. Upon successful completion you will be mailed a Fine Vintage AWP certificate.

Who takes these courses? If you work in the production, sales or marketing of American wines then this course is essential. But the course is also open to and enjoyed by all wine lovers who are interested to know more about this fascinating industry.

Registration Terms: When you register online, your credit card is charged a $100 deposit. The remaining payment for all fees will be automatically processed in full 3 weeks prior to the course start date on the credit card provided.

The full course tuition (deposit plus remainder payment) is 100% non-refundable from the date you register. But your course fees are transferable as a credit to another course date, or to another person, once. This transfer request must be made in writing three weeks prior to the start of the 1st class. Transfer requests received after this time will not be accepted and you will forfeit your full payment.
