Course Overview
During the course you will be introduced to the world of spirits. You will learn how spirits are made, from the raw material right through to distillation and the final adjustments that shape each style. You will become familiar with the principal categories — including Cognac, vodka, whisk(e)y, rum, Tequila, gin, flavoured spirits and aromatised wines — and learn the key principles behind creating a balanced cocktail. Learn how to taste and describe spirits like a pro, and gain an internationally recognized certification, all from the comfort of your own home.
There are seven modules:
Module 1: What spirits are and how they are made — the four key stages of production, the two types of still, and the processes that affect aroma, sweetness and colour
Module 2: Cognac, vodka, and an introduction to tasting using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting®
Module 3: Whisk(e)y — the principal categories, raw materials, production processes and labelling terms
Module 4: Rum and Tequila — the principal types, raw materials, production processes and labelling terms
Module 5: Flavoured spirits and aromatised wines
Module 6: Mixing with spirits — the principles of balance and the core cocktail families
Module 7: Revision and mock feedback exam
Price & Payments
The WSET Level 1 in Spirits online course costs US$299, all-inclusive. The cost includes access to the WSET online course, your textbook (provided within the online materials), a dedicated expert instructor, your exam fees, and certificate.
You will need to purchase your own spirit samples, if you desire. It is not a requirement to buy any spirits to complete this course, but it is beneficial to taste a selection to get the most out of it. After registration, we provide you with a list of recommended spirit styles that are widely available.

Online Program
You can choose from multiple start dates, with courses regularly scheduled throughout the year. You will have four weeks from the course start date to complete the seven modules. You can do these seven modules at your own pace, be it all in one day or spread over four weeks. The course material should take about six hours in total to complete, plus revision time. You will have access to a certified spirits educator through the online portal, and can ask questions throughout the course.
Examination
Your WSET Level 1 exam is completed fully online using remote invigilation. You must have a laptop or desktop computer to complete the exam. Fine Vintage offers regular online exam dates to fit your schedule. You can pick your exam date and time online immediately after you register for the course or you can select your exam date anytime in the next 11 months. You have one year from your course start date to schedule and take your exam.
The exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions, to be completed in 45 minutes. A grade of 70% or higher is required to pass. You will receive your results by email, and if successful, you will receive a WSET certificate which is a formal qualification in spirits with international recognition.
We require 10 business days notice to register you for the WSET Level 1 exam. There is a US$100 fee to change your exam date after it is scheduled or to resit the exam, if required.
You should have a reasonable degree of technical ability to use the examination software. You will receive detailed set-up instructions after you register.
The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is a formal qualification in spirits with international recognition. Many students frame their WSET certificates.

We do welcome many people from the drinks industry, especially those working in bars, restaurants, retail and distribution. This is an introductory course and we presume no prior knowledge. You will have access to certified instructors throughout the online program.

Study Guide
You will be emailed the access codes to the online course by the WSET within two business days of the start of the course. For Level 1 in Spirits, all study materials — including the textbook — are included within the online course; there are no physical resources to send. Fine Vintage will also email you a list of practice exam questions to help you thoroughly prepare.
