Canadian Wine Scholar Certification Program

Fine Vintage is the creator and sole provider of the Canadian Wine ScholarTM certification program. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to use the post-nominal CWS.

The Canadian wine industry is extremely dynamic and growing rapidly. There more than 700 wineries spread across the country, employing more than 37,000 people and generating over $9 billion in grape-related economic impact. The changes in the last 25 years are nothing short of staggering.

The Canadian Wine Scholar program was developed by James Cluer, Master of Wine, and David Lawrason, considered to be among the leading experts on Canadian wines.

The course includes in-depth coverage of all the major and minor wine regions in Canada. In addition the course covers the commercial aspects of producing, selling and marketing wine in the major Canadian markets.

During the 2-day course you will taste more than 30 benchmark examples of wines from the leading producers in a wide variety of styles.

At the end of the 2nd day there is a 50-question closed-book multiple-choice exam. There is no pre-requisite for this course.

Course format: This course takes place over 2 full days from 9.30 am until 5.30 pm with a one-hour break for lunch.

Tastings: During this course you will taste more than 30 wines showcasing the wide variety of styles and grapes produced in Canada, including the benchmark wines.

Price: $599 total, including tax. If do not already have 6 ISO tasting glasses you will need to purchase them through us at an additional cost of $45 plus GST.

Materials: Included in the price is a study guide on the wines of Canada. This is e-mailed to you so you can read it prior to the course. At the course you will receive a printed version.

Examination: The Canadian Wine Scholar exam takes place at the very end of the last day of the course, at 4.30 pm, and lasts for 1 hour. The exam is closed-book and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The Canadian Wine Scholar (CWS) credential will be conferred on those who achieve a score of 65% or higher. Upon successful completion you will be mailed a Fine Vintage CWS certificate.

If you work in the production, sales or marketing of Canadian wines then this course is essential. But the course is also open to and enjoyed by all wine lovers who are interested to know more about this fascinating industry.

Registration Terms

The full course tuition (deposit plus remainder payment) is 100% non-refundable from the date you register. But your course fees are transferable as a credit to another course date, or to another person, once. This transfer request must be made in writing three weeks prior to the start of the 1st class. Transfer requests received after this time will not be accepted and you will forfeit your full payment.
